Camberwell Dragons Youth League Women, including Matilda Quartel, Zoe Johnson and Amelie Atkinson (all pictured), moved into the second round of the Big V finals after opening their playoff campaign with a 58-53 road win against the Coburg Giants on Saturday night.

Johnson, the league's leading rebounder, posted a game-high 16-point, 17-rebound double-double to pace Camberwell. Atkinson added 10 points, Mia Demarte pulled down seven boards to go with seven points, and point guard Jessica Del Brocco had six points, six assists and five rebounds for the Dragons, who had to fend off a late challenge by their host.

Camberwell led by three points at the half and stretched its advantage to 10 at three quarter-time before the Giants made some noise late.

Next up for Camberwell is a Sunday afternoon date (August 3) with Knox at the State Basketball Centre (12pm). Geelong United with host Eltham in the other YLW playoff game this weekend after the Wildcats cruised past visiting Whittlesea at Eltham High School on Saturday night.

In other Dragons Big V action at the weekend:

– Our Youth League Men bowed out of the title race after a 79-63 road loss to Pakenham in their playoff opener at Cardinia Life on Saturday night. Jesse Macleod (11 points, seven rebounds, four assists) and Matthew Marcun (11 points, two steals) led the way for Camberwell, but the Dragons fell behind by 17 points in the first quarter and never threatened again.

– Our Division 1 Women closed their season with a 57-50 road win against playoff-bound Western Port. Eleni Valos finished with a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double and Meg Stagoll added eight points, 12 boards and three assists for the Dragons, who finished their season in sixth place with a 9-9 win-loss record.

– And Sean Conway erupted for his second 40-plus point game in three outings, finishing with 42 points, six rebounds and five steals in a 103-87 road loss for our Championship Men against Blackburn. Matt Hart added 16 points and five boards for Camberwell, which fell to 8-13. The eight-placed Dragons will close their season against visiting Wyndham at Boroondara Sports Complex on Saturday night (August 2). Game time is 6pm.
