One to remember

Our Youth League Women – including Zoe Johnson (10), Mia Demarte (35), Ava Kirkwood (25) and Matilda Quartel (pictured) – bowed out of the title race after falling to title favourite Knox in their Big V semi-final at the State Basketball Centre on Sunday, but we won’t forget this game – or this team – any time soon.

With a large and vocal Dragons crowd watching on, Camberwell gave its host everything it could handle in an absorbing contest that wasn’t decided until the final seconds – the Raiders holding on for a 66-64 win.

Zoe Johnson, who led the league in scoring this season, delivered again for the Dragons, closing with an equal game-high 21 points, 15 rebounds and four steals. Point guard Jessica Del Brocco added 19 points, seven boards and two steals, while Matilda Quartel flirted with a double-double on her way to eight points and nine rebounds.

Emily Sewell had 21 points and 11 rebounds to pace Knox (21-1 in the regular season), which advanced to set up a date with Eltham in the championship game.

In other Dragons Big V action at the weekend, our Championship Men closed their season with an 89-78 win against Wyndham at Boroondara Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Lachlan Viney led Camberwell with a team-high 25 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Tom James registered a 14-point, 16-rebound double-double.

The Dragons signed off with a 9-13 record and finished in eighth place.

On a Mission

Camberwell Dragons Youth League Women’s team will be looking to move on in the Big V playoffs when it meets Knox in a high-noon shootout at the State Basketball Centre today.

The Dragons set up this much-anticipated date with the Raiders after holding off Coburg in the finals opener for both teams at Coburg Stadium last weekend – Zoe Johnson (pictured with Matilda Quartel and Amelie Atkinson) leading the way for Camberwell with a 16-point, 17-rebound double-double.

Johnson has been a standout for the Dragons this season and enters today’s game averaging a team-high 13.5 points and league-leading 13.6 rebounds.

Camberwell was 0-2 against Knox in the regular season but gave the Raiders everything they could handle in a 53-50 loss at the State Basketball Centre back on June 21.

In Dragons Big V action this weekend, our Championship Men closed their season with an 89-78 home win against Wyndham at Boroondara Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Lachlan Viney had a team-high 25 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals to pace the Dragons, and Tom James added a 14-point, 16-rebound double-double.

Camberwell signed off for the season with a 9-13 win-loss record and in eighth place, two games back from seventh-placed Shepparton (11-11).
