Jackson Meshanic erupted for a Big V career-high 35 points and our Championship Men kept their playoff hopes alive with a 104-100 road win against Warrandyte at Mullum Mullum Stadium on Saturday night.

Meshanic added 12 rebounds and point guard Brennen Burns had 24 points, seven boards and five assists for the Dragons, who made a slow start before finding their offensive rhythm. After being held to just 15 points in the first quarter, Camberwell scored 89 points the rest of the way, including 60 in the second half, to hold off its host.

It was another big night for Meshanic, who shot the ball at a blistering 68 per cent from the field (13-of-19) and connected on four of eight three-point attempts. He closed the round averaging a team-leading 21 points (fifth in the league) and 10.9 rebounds a game (third).

Warrandyte’s Lanyc Shuler led all scorers with 36 points, while Daniel Powell and Riley Simmons each added 13 points for the Dragons, who improved to 6-7 and are in seventh place heading into this weekend’s clash with Bellarine – Game 3 of Saturday night’s triple-header Boroondara Sports Complex (BSC).

In other Dragons Big V action over the weekend:

– Eleni Valos logged a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double for our Division 1 Women in a 64-59 road loss against Craigieburn on Saturday night. Matilda Grech added 13 points and five boards and Maeve Gray had four rebounds and three assists to go with nine points for the Dragons.

– Jesse Macleod led all scorers with 22 points as our third-placed Youth League Men improved to 12-4 with a 76-72 road win against Westgate. Macleod added six rebounds and Billy Barton had 12 points, nine boards and four assists for the Dragons, who trailed 39-38 at the half.

– And our Youth League Women rallied late on the road for a 74-69 overtime win against Coburg. Camberwell trailed by eight entering the fourth quarter, but outscored its host 20-12 over the last 10 minutes of regulation and then had the answers for the Giants in OT. Talia D’agostino paced the Dragons with 17 points, Lucy Rowe posted a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double and Tilly Quartel reeled in 14 boards to go with nine points and four steals. Camberwell improved to 8-10.

Jesse Macleod led the way with a game-high 20 points and handed out five assists as our Big V Youth League Men hammered Bulleen at Boroondara Sports Complex on Saturday night to remain within striking distance of a top-two finish.

Billy Barton added 17 points and seven rebounds and Matt Marcun had 15 points, seven boards and four assists for Camberwell, which pulled away for a 78-59 win and improved to 11-4 with five games left to play in the regular season. Sunbury leads the league with a 13-2 record, with Coburg (13-4) in second place.

The Dragons made a fast start in this one to lead by 12 at the half and then put the game out of the Boomers’ reach with a 27-11 third quarter. Bulleen dropped to 8-8.

Next up for the Dragons is a road date against Westgate on Saturday night (June 27).

In other Dragons Big V action over the weekend:

– Jackson Meshanic had a game-high 25 points, 18 rebounds and five assists in a 91-85 road loss for our Championship Men against Pakenham. Brennen Burns added 17 points, six assists and five boards for the Dragons, who dropped to 5-7 overall. They’re in eighth place with eight regular season games left to play – the first of them against Warrandyte at Mullum Mullum Stadium next Saturday night (8pm). Hume City (11-1) leads the competition from McKinnon (9-3) and Pakenham (7-5).

– Eleni Valos closed with 15 points and five rebounds and Anna Burrows had eight points and eight boards in an 81-49 loss for our Division 1 Women against Melbourne University at Balwyn High School on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons are on the road this weekend for a Saturday night with Craigieburn (6pm).

– In the early game at Balwyn High on Sunday, our Youth League Women fell behind early and couldn’t reel in Bendigo in the second half. Jess Del Brocco, playing her 50th Big V game for the Dragons, paced Camberwell with a game-high 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 66-56 loss. Lucy Rowe added a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double and Ciara Newman dragged in 12 boards. The Dragons continue their regular season campaign against Coburg on the road on Sunday (1pm).

Dragons Development Squad is back for Term 3.

The Squad is open to players aged 8-11 who’ve played domestic basketball and are looking to improve their skills and get a taste of “representative basketball-style” training. Please note this program is not suitable for beginners.

Matt Marcun led the way with a team-high 18 points and former Dragons junior Tyson Mackenzie (pictured) added 16 points and two steals as our Big V Youth League Men went the distance with league leader Sunbury again at Boardman Stadium on Saturday night.

The Jets held on for 76-74 win – their second against Camberwell this season – but not before the Dragons gave their host everything they could handle after trailing by eight points at the half.

Billy Barton closed with 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals and Jesse Macleod had eight points and 10 boards for Camberwell, which slipped to 10-4 and is in third place behind Sunbury (13-1) and Coburg (12-4).

Also at the weekend:

– Another former Dragons junior, Jaden Lai, finished with a team-high 18 points and five rebounds in just under 19 minutes for our Championship Men, who lost on the road against RMIT University. Riley Simmons added a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double for the Dragons, who fell behind by 10 at quarter-time and never recovered en route to a 91-75 loss.

– Katie Harrington had a team-high 16 points and four steals on debut for our Division 1 Women in a 77-65 loss to Whittlesea at Mill Park on Saturday night. Sian Gillam added 13 points and six rebounds and Anna Burrows pulled in eight boards to go with 10 points for the Dragons.

– And Ruby Clark showed the way with 11 points, five rebounds and two steals as our Youth League Women shook off Whittlesea for a 58-42 road win at Mill Park on Saturday night. Jessica Del Brocco added nine points, nine boards, seven assists and eight steals for Camberwell, which improved to 7-9.

The challenges keep coming for the Camberwell Dragons 14.1 Girls, who will compete at the Foot Locker Under 14 Club Championships in Perth in September.

The girls received their invitation to the prestigious event after excelling during the first half of the Victorian Championship (VC) season and will become only the second team from Camberwell to compete at the nationals. They’ll follow in the footsteps of the Under 14 boys team that represented the Dragons in 2024.

More than 600 athletes, coaches and officials representing the 48 best clubs teams from across the country will make their way to Perth for this year’s event, which will be co-hosted by Willetton Basketball Association and Basketball Australia from September 27-October 2.

It’s been a big year already for our 14.1 Girls, who reached the bronze medal game at the National Junior Classic in Melbourne over the King’s Birthday Weekend, and hold down fourth place in VC competition with seven games left in the regular season.

The Dragons improved to 1-1 with a 58-43 win against Knox at the State Basketball Centre on Friday night.

12.1 Girls

The Girls U12.1 team had a fantastic experience competing in the Nunawading Tournament in A-Grade. The girls showed great focus, intensity and commitment throughout the tournament, winning four of their five games and earning a spot in the Grand Final.

They continued to work hard, play together and support each other on and off the court, finishing the tournament as runners-up. A fantastic effort from the team and a great reflection of their teamwork and development.

Thank you to all parents for their support across the weekend, and a special thank you to Georgi for stepping in as team manager.

12.2 Girls

The 12.2 Girls (pictured above) started out with two close losses, but with the determination and desire to make the Grand Final the girls left everything they had on the court over the next few games to finish second and make it into the AR Grand final.

We played Broadmeadows 1 in the Grand Final and despite the Broncos being a VCR team, the girls played really hard against them and fought till the end. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the win, losing by 14 points, but I am so proud of all of the girls’ efforts over this tournament. They continuously took on my feedback and improved with each game and their effort and intensity could not be faulted.

16.5 Girls

The girls were very keen to play and looking forward to spending time with their teammates.

We were a little short on numbers and very pleased that Jess, from the 16.4s, was able to join us for the weekend.

The girls played high-intensity basketball each game, playing tough defence and always looking for the fast break. We won four of five games games, only losing the last game late on Sunday night. Fortunately, our efforts were rewarded with us finishing on top with a better percentage.

The Grand Final on Monday was very close all game with the game tied with only a few minutes left. The girls again showed their resilience and desire to keep up the strong defence and looking for the fast breaks. We managed two quick fast breaks and a turnover in those last few minutes to secure the win.

The icing on the cake was Gemma being voted MVP for the Grand Final. A great result for the all the girls and the very supportive parents.

12.8 Boys

Overall, it was a really positive tournament for the team, and there were clear signs of improvement in many of the key fundamentals we have been working on in training. The players showed much better basics in dribbling, passing and shooting, and there was stronger team connection throughout the games. Defensively, it was great to see the players starting to apply what we have been practising at training, with better effort, positioning, and teamwork.

Moving forward, there are still some key areas we will continue to improve. One area is having more patience in the game, especially during the third quarter, both on offence and defence. At times, we rushed decisions or lost focus under pressure.

To improve this, we will continue to practise more team-based concepts, particularly our 5-out offence, and build habits that help players trust each other, play with quick pace, and handle pressure situations better. As we continue training and competing, we will work through these challenges together and keep improving step by step.

14.1 Girls

The 14.1 Girls (above) went in with big goals leading into the Classic. We set our standards high knowing we had a tough pool, having not seen any of our opposition before we went in with positive mindsets and the idea we can just focus on us and our brand of basketball.

Saturday morning, we played a tough Traralgon. We started the game strong but couldn’t really extend our lead throughout the game. We happily took a 12-point win and knew we had work to do to play our best basketball.

The next two games we came up against West Adelaide and Penrith. Our defence across the board was fairly consistent but we just couldn’t find our groove when it came to scoring in the half court. We won both games but knew we could still play better as a group. 

We qualified on top of our ladder and had made the top eight for the tournament, something we were very happy to tick off. We had a great game against Knox. Having played them a couple of times, we knew a bit more of what to expect and the girls executed instructions perfectly. I was proud of our team defence and our willingness to work as a “unit”. We won that game by
15 and had made the top four.

Coming up against Casey, we knew if we played similar defence to the morning game, we would be in with a red-hot crack. We pushed Casey right to the end but unfortunately, their outside shooting got us in the end. While we slowed them, we found it challenging to consistently get great shots. We lost that game by 10 points in the end, but credit to the girls, we were within two-three points right down to the last few minutes. A game the girls should certainly be proud of and have belief that we’re right there with the best. 

We had Dandenong in the Bronze Medal game. A game we led for most of the game, they hit a three with about two minutes to go and we couldn’t recover. We locked in for defence and committed to what we put out there but unfortunately, we just couldn’t get across the line in the end. 

Finishing fourth is certainly something to be happy about. We are so proud of this group and although we didn’t medal this year, the girls’ brand of basketball, IQ and commitment they show each game is certainly something to be proud. No doubt this group has a bright future, both heading into the back end of the season and going on beyond 14s.

14.1 Boys

The Under 14 Boys had a great experience at the National Junior Classic.

Despite tough losses to Knox and Norwood on the Saturday, the boys returned to form on Sunday with a close win against a Sutherland team that continued to hang around and a well-rounded victory over Norths Bears.

Although they went down to South Adelaide on Sunday night, a second close win – this time over Central Districts – got the team into an 11th-placed finish.

The atmosphere was nothing like the boys have experienced and they adjusted well to the high intensity of the weekend and will take plenty of learnings into the VC season.

18.1 Boys

The 18.1 Boys (below) finished with three wins and three losses at the NJC, coming in 10th place.

We kicked off with a narrow 70-68 to Nunawading (which ended up finishing fifth). A fantastic demonstration of resilience that saw us delete a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to tie the game with four minutes remaining, but not quite keep the momentum going to win.

We backed up that game with another strong performance against SA state champion Forestville. After a slightly sluggish start, we opened up our scoring in the second half, ultimately finishing with a 72-48 win.

Our first of three games on Sunday saw us take on North Bears, who were also 1-1 through Saturday’s pool games. A great first-quarter effort saw us up six at the first break, and 13 made three-pointers kept us competitive for the full 32 minutes, but unfortunately we couldn’t quite keep up with North’s physicality, and we fell short, losing 70-55.

Heading into the back-end of the weekend playing off in the shield division (ninth-16th), we re-aligned our goal to aim for a ninth-place finish. We began shield play with a 70-63 win against SA state silver medallist Norwood; a game where we managed to survive a late Norwood run to get us back to .500.

Our 8.30pm Sunday game against Ballarat, a team that had beaten us by one point last Friday, proved to be our best game of the weekend. Great unselfishness saw us end the game on a 13-0 run to win 67-54.

Our sixh and final game against Manly Warringah was a classic end-of-tournament game by both teams – lacking excitement. We traded buckets for most of the game, but unfortunately fell into foul trouble in the fourth and Manly got over the top of us, 62-56.

A big shout-out to the boys as the first Under 18 Camberwell team to qualify for the Classic, particularly considering only three of the boys have played in one before.

We look forward to continuing to “sharpen our axe” in the back end of the season and make a run into VC finals.
