Bendigo gold rush

Camberwell’s Sophie Richardson and her Vic Metro team will play for the gold medal at the Foot Locker Under 16 National Championships in Bendigo today (Sunday, 11am).

Sophie, from Camberwell Dragons 16.1s team, and the Vics secured a date with Queensland South in the championship game after turning back Queensland North in the semi-finals at Red Energy Arena yesterday – the Victorians pulling away for a 70-51 win.

The Vics are 6-1 at the tournament, with their only blemish being a 71-62 loss to Queensland South in Pool play.

The Vic Metro girls are one of two Victorian teams playing for national titles this morning, with the Vic Metro Boys scheduled to tip things off in the championship game against New South Wales Metro at 1pm. They beat South Australia Metro 89-71 in the semi-finals yesterday to advance.

Sophie, Vic Metro eye place in semis

Camberwell’s Sophie Richardson and Vic Metro will go head to head with Vic Country in Bendigo today for a place in the Foot Locker Under 16 National Championship semi-finals.

Sophie logged a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double in 19 minutes on Thursday as Vic Metro (4-1) cruised past New South Wales Metro, 73-48, to secure second place in its Pool behind unbeaten Queensland South, and a date with Vic Country in today’s quarter-finals. Tip-off time at Red Energy Arena is 2pm.

In other Girls quarter-final action today, Queensland South plays Tasmania (12pm), South Australia Metro meets Western Australia Metro (2pm), and Queensland North squares off with New South Wales Metro (12pm).

In the Boys competition, Vic Metro plays Tasmania (4pm), unbeaten Western Australia Metro plays Western Australia Country (4pm), Vic Country goes at it with New South Wales Metro at 6pm, and Queensland South has a date with South Australia Metro at 6pm.

Let’s go, Sophie

Our own Sophie Richardson and the Vic Metro team launch their Under 16 National Championships campaign in Bendigo this weekend.

Sophie, from the Camberwell Dragons 16.1 Girls team, and the Vics open their tournament against Western Australia Metro at the Red Energy Arena on Sunday (12pm).

They’ll also meet New South Wales Metro, Queensland South, South Australia Country and Australian Capital Territory in Pool play throughout the week, with the top four teams in the pool advancing to the quarter-finals.

South Australia Metro, Queensland North, Victoria Country, Tasmania, New South Wales Country, Western Australia Country and Northern Territory are on the other side of the draw (Pool A).

The national championship game will be played next Sunday (July 14).

Road to the Champs

Camberwell Dragons 14.1 Boys are going to Basketball Australia’s Foot Locker National Club Championships in September.

They’re the first Camberwell team invited to compete at a national championship, making this a very big deal for players, coaches, families and the entire Dragons program.

It’s been a big year already for coach Conor Mathews’ team, which put together a 7-2 record through the first half of the Victorian Championship (VC) season and finished ninth at last month’s National Junior Classic in Melbourne. Now, they’ve got their sights set on the last couple of months of the VC season and the national championships, and they’d love your support along the way.
