It’s back to work for our 14.1 Boys at the Foot Locker Under 14 Club Championships today.

After opening their campaign with a win and a loss against Cockburn Cougars and Canberra at Casey Stadium yesterday, the Dragons hit the hardwood again this afternoon for a 3pm date with unbeaten Sydney team Norths Bears.

The unbeaten Bears (2-0) lead Group F at the Championships from the Dragons (1-1), Canberra (1-1) and Cockburn (0-2).

The 14.1 Boys are proudly supported by Monopoly Dreams, BG Private, Kim’s Cleaning and Home Care Services, Melbourne Sports Photography, Bread Street (Mont Albert), Bennet’s Butchery (Canterbury) and Rocket Digital.

Camberwell Dragons 14.1 Boys will open Day 2 at the Foot Locker Under 14 Club Championships with a 1-1 win-loss record after splitting today’s games against WA team Cockburn Cougars and Canberra.

The Dragons were too good for the Cougars in a 75-55 win in the tournament opener for both teams at Casey Stadium this morning, but couldn’t contain contain Canberra at the same venue this afternoon – the Gunners pulling away for an 81-69 victory and their first win at the Championships.

“A bit of a rough second game of the tournament,” Camberwell assistant coach Tom Macleod told Dragons Media. “We took some great learnings that we will take into the future games. We are proud of the sportsmanship displayed by the lads.”

Owen Trainor had a team-high 17 points to lead the Dragons and was one of three double-digit scorers for Camberwell with Jake Zeunert (13) and Bailey Russell (11).

The Dragons’ campaign resumes tomorrow with a 3pm game against Norths Bears (2-0), while Canberra (1-1) will square off against Cockburn (0-2).

Camberwell Dragons made an impressive start to their campaign at the Foot Locker Under 14 Club Championships in Casey today, rolling to a 75-55 win in their tournament opener against WA team Cockburn Cougars.

Jake Zeunert had an equal game-high 24 points, including six three-pointers, to pace the Dragons, who had five players score seven points or more.

“A great start for our campaign,” coach Conor Mathews told Dragons Media. “We set the tone early with our defensive physicality and pressure, and spaced the floor well to hit shots.”

Bailey Russell added 16 points for Camberwell, which will be back at work again on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons play Canberra at 3.30pm before shifting their focus to a Monday showdown with Sydney team Norths Bears.

These are good times for our 20.2 Girls, who’ll be the last Dragons team standing when the VJBL season draws to a close on Friday.

The girls, led by coach Craig Rumble and pictured here (without Lara Pravic) at the Eltham Dandenong Tournament, will go head to head with Melbourne 1 in the VJL 1 Grand Final at the State Basketball Centre (Friday, September 19, Court 12, 8pm).

These Dragons put together a 13-4-1 record to finish tied on points with top-of-the-table Melbourne at the end of the regular season, but have had to do it the hard way to reach the decider after falling to the Tigers in the second round of of the finals.

They took care of business with a 31-24 win against Whittlesea 1 last Friday to earn another shot at Melbourne, and are now in a position to make a run at the title in what, for many of them, will be their last outing for a junior Dragons team.

Also worth noting is two of them – Lucy Patel and Lisa Ong – are assistant coaches in our junior Dragons program, so if you can make it out to support them on Friday night the way they support our Under 12 and Under 14 girls teams, we know they’d love to see you there.

Friday night is the start of another big weekend of Dragons basketball, with our 14.1 Boys also preparing to run the hardwood again.

The exciting young Dragons, led by coach Conor Mathews, will open their history-making Foot Locker Under 14 Club Championship campaign at Casey Stadium on Sunday. First up for Camberwell is a 10.30am date with WA team Cockburn Cougars.

“Mia is always up to the challenge of taking one of the opposition’s best players every week. You can see the pride she takes in playing defence and getting those sneaky steals off the guards.
