Jessica Del Brocco led the way with 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals as our Big V Youth League Women cruised to a 70-50 win against Whittlesea at Boroondara Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Mia Demarte added 10 points and four steals and Amelie Atkinson had 10 points and three assists for the Dragons, who set up their third win of the season with a 42-22 first half.

Camberwell improved to 3-2 and will enter the Easter break in sixth place. Next up for coach Paris Joannides (pictured) and the Dragons is a road date with Bendigo (1-2) on April 11.

In other Dragons Big V action over the weekend:

– Hume City rallied late to beat our Championship Men in the season opener for both teams at Balwyn High School on Sunday afternoon – the Broncos outscoring the Dragons 23-15 in the final quarter to win it 93-87. Brennen Burns (below) had a team-high 23 points and seven rebounds on debut for Camberwell and Jackson Meshanic, also making his first appearance for the Dragons, finished with a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double.

– In the late game at BSC on Saturday night, Whittlesea made a fast start and then held off our Division 1 Women for a 76-65 win. Eleni Valos (below) paced the Dragons with a team-high 23 points and eight steals and Sian Gillam added eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Camberwell (1-1) did its best work after half-time, outscoring the Pacers 35-28 over the last 20 minutes.

– And at Coburg, the hometown Giants held off our fast-finishing Youth League Men, 96-94. Jesse Macleod scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Dragons and Billy Barton added 26 points and 11 rebounds for the visitors, who made things close down the stretch after trailing by 11 at the half. It was the first loss for the Dragons, who opened the season on a three-game winning streak.

Camberwell Basketball is excited to announce that two-time National Basketball League champion Andrew Parkinson and world-class Disability Extreme Athlete Bobby Bajram headline our list of guest speakers for Mental Health Awareness Week (April 26-May 2).

Both will present at the Balwyn Community Centre on Thursday, April 30 (from 7pm-8.30pm).

About Andrew Parkinson

Andrew won two NBL championships with South East Melbourne Magic playing for head coach Brian Goorjian and is remembered as one of the most lethal three-point shooters in league history. He recently participated in the Legends of Basketball Game for Bowel Cancer at the State Basketball Centre in Melbourne.

Andrew has faced significant health challenges in recent years and will speak openly about his inspiring journey in a wide-ranging and revealing presentation that will cover his playing days, his own battle with cancer, dealing with adversity, staying connected, and what it means to be part of a very special community.

About Bobby Bajram

Bobby Bajram was just 13 years old when he was diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis, a condition that would leave him legally blind, reliant on mobility aids and facing immense physical and emotional challenges. More than four decades later, he has scaled some of the world’s highest mountains and is now in training to climb Mount Everest in 2027.

Bobby’s story is one of extraordinary courage, determination and defying the odds. His presentation will cover passion and purpose, resilience, staying positive through tough times and what’s driving him to “walk to the top of the world and see the blue sky”.

Who’s Invited: This event is for players competing at Under 16 level and above for/and in Camberwell Basketball teams and competitions, coaches, referees, administrators, partners and their families/guardians. Camberwell Basketball teams include those competing in the Dragons junior and senior programs and the Community Basketball League.

Register: Seating for this event will be limited, so please register one additional family member/guardian only if accompanying an attendee under 18 years of age. Ace Adama led the way with 15 points and three steals as our Youth League Men continued their strong start to the Big V season with a 92-71 road win against Blackburn at Mullum Mullum Stadium on Sunday.

Owen Ireland added 14 points (on 7-of-9 shooting) and six rebounds in 19 minutes and Jesse Macleod had 14 points, five boards and four assists for Camberwell, which took control of this one with a 28-15 second quarter and never looked back on the way to its third straight win.

Camberwell improved to 3-0 and closed Round 2 in second place behind also unbeaten Sunbury (3-0) and ahead of McKinnon (2-0) and Bendigo (2-1).

Eleni Valos (below) finished with a game-high 19 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and three assists to lead our Division 1 Women to a 53-46 road win in their season opener against Collingwood. Anna Burrows added a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double for Camberwell, which needed a 13-8 final quarter to shake off its host.

And our Youth League Women dropped back-to-back games, against visiting Bellarine at BSC on Saturday night and on the road against Western Port on Sunday. Gemma Watson (below) had a team-high 22 points in a 67-59 loss to Bellarine, while Mia Demarte closed with 14 points, six rebounds and eight steals in a 51-47 loss at Western Port.

Our Association is planning to shine a light on this important issue, which impacts so many lives in our – and the wider – community, and will release full details of the week shortly, including a quality line-up of guest speakers and presenters. Speakers will present at local venues on Monday, April 27 and Thursday, April 30 (from 7pm). Please save the dates.

Mental Health Awareness presentations and activities will be open to all members of the Camberwell Basketball community – including those involved with the Dragons and/or the Community Basketball League – and their families. Our Dragons enter tonight’s game with a 2-0 record after opening their season with wins against Sunbury and Albury Wodonga last weekend. Bellarine is 1-1.

It’s the first of two games this weekend for the YLW, who back up on the road against Western Port at Somerville tomorrow afternoon.

In other Dragons’ Big V action this weekend, our Division 1 Women open their season against Collingwood at Collingwood College tonight (6pm) and our Youth League Men (2-0) play Blackburn at Mullum Mullum Stadium tomorrow (2.30pm).

The season opener for our Championship Men is still a week away. They’ll host Hume City at Balwyn High School next Sunday (March 29, 12pm).

Billy Barton led the way with a pair of double-doubles as Camberwell’s Youth League Men turned back Bendigo and Wyndham to win back-to-back games on the opening weekend of the Big V season.

Making his first appearance for the YLM, Barton closed with 14 points and 12 boards in the Dragons’ 76-64 win against the Braves on opening night at Boroondara Sports Complex (BSC) and then went to work on Wyndham at Balwyn High School on Sunday afternoon – finishing with 24 points, 17 boards, four assists and three blocks in a 99-90 Camberwell win.

Jesse Macleod added 20 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Dragons, who outscored their guest 56-41 after halftime, and Caleb Lingwood-Smith (below) had 15 points and five boards to go with his 19-point, 11-rebound haul against Bendigo on opening night.

It was an impressive start to the season by the YLM and one matched by our Youth League Women, who opened their campaign with a hard-fought road win against Sunbury on Saturday before cruising past Albury Wodonga at Balwyn High on Sunday.

Jessica Del Brocco had a game-high 14 points, five rebounds and four steals to pace Camberwell and Hannah Morsi reeled in 19 boards to go with four points for the Dragons, who shook off a slow start to outscore Sunbury 36-21 in the second half on their way to a 61-49 win.

Camberwell made short work of the Bandits on Sunday, setting up its 80-47 win with a 39-17 first half. Gemma Watson (below) led the Dragons with a team-high 16 points, four rebounds and three assists and captain Amelie Atkinson finished with nine points and four assists.
