South East Melbourne Phoenix will be playing for its survival in the National Basketball League playoffs when it goes head to head with Illawarra Hawks in Game 2 of their best-of-three semi-final series at John Cain Arena on Sunday afternoon (2.30pm).

Illawarra opened with a 101-94 win in Wollongong on Friday night, putting it within one win of advancing to the championship series and leaving Phoenix needing a win to keep its title hopes alive. Tickets for tomorrow’s game are available at Ticketek.

On the other side of the NBL playoff bracket, Melbourne United will be looking to close out its semi-final series against Perth when it meets the Wildcats in the west tonight.

More good times for Camberwell Dragons at the weekend, with the club’s 14.1 Girls (top left), 14.2 Girls (top right) and 12.1 Boys all posting wins on Friday night to qualify for VJBL Victorian Championship (VC) competition.

The 14.1 Girls made short work of Frankston 2, 53-50, at the State Basketball Centre to clinch their place among the top 20 teams in Victoria, and were joined by the 14.2 Girls, who took care of business with a 34-25 win against Waverley 1 at Nunawading.

And it was a big night, too, for our 12.1 Boys, who took control of their match-up with Altona 1 at MSAC with a 12-3 second quarter and never looked back on their way to a 52-37 win. Lachlan Li leading the way with a team-high 15 points as the Dragons closed their qualifying campaign in style.

Camberwell entered this week with six teams having qualified for VC play – the three teams above joining our 12.1 Girls, 16.1 Girls and 16.1 Boys.

VJBL crossover games continue this week (February 28) before the regular season opens on March 7.

With our program already attracting record numbers this term, Camberwell Basketball today added another session to its weekly Aussie Hoops schedule, with young hoopers now able to start, or continue, their basketball journey on Sunday mornings at Kew High School (10am-10.45am).

Rohan will be the special guest at Camberwell Basketball’s next Outside the Lines session, on Thursday, March 20, and will share his wealth of experience in sports administration, event management and coaching. This session is free for Camberwell Basketball members (and affiliated leagues and club members) aged 15 and over.

Michele Timms is a three-time Olympian, one of the all-time greats of our game at home and overseas, and one of only three Australians to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

Michele’s journey from the asphalt courts of Belle Vue Primary School in Balwyn North to the very top of international basketball wasn’t always smooth, and her extraordinary career, which saw her play professionally in Australia, Europe and the United States, was testament to her passion for the game, perseverance and an incredible work ethic.

Camberwell In Business is excited to welcome Michele as the guest speaker for its three-course dinner and networking event at Pincho Disco next month, and you’re invited to join us on Wednesday, March 19, for what will be a very special evening with a true legend of Australian sport.

Look who’s back to lead the Camberwell Dragons’ senior women’s team in Big V 2025.

Coming off a season in which she led the Dragons with 16 points and seven rebounds a game, Eleni Valos is returning for her fourth year at Camberwell and will play a prominent role again for head coach Cara Jeffers.

Eleni and the Dragons open their Big V Division 1 campaign with road games against Chelsea (March 23) and Western Port (March 29) before hosting Whittlesea in their home opener at Balwyn High School on March 30.

Congratulations to two of our panel referees, Daniel Adetunji and Jonah Fleming, who represented Camberwell at the Foot Locker Under 20 and Ivor Burge National Championships in Ballarat.

The two Level 2 officials were selected to work the Ivor Burge competition – a great accomplishment, and an opportunity for both of them to continue to improve their officiating skills and to receive coaching along the way.

Adetunji was selected to referee the Ivor Burge women’s gold medal game – a massive personal achievement.
