Trevor lands leading role with Dragons

Camberwell Dragons are delighted to introduce Trevor Rowe as the club’s first Culture and Leadership Coordinator.

Trevor brings decades of leadership and coaching experience to the newly created position and will work alongside club Directors of Coaching Michael Dimattina and Steve Lunardon to support our coaching group and streamline communication between coaches, players and parents/guardians.

“Trevor is a very experienced leader and highly respected coach who adds depth, strength and tremendous stability to our basketball department,” Camberwell Basketball Chief Executive Officer Ross Wignell said today.

“The Camberwell Dragons junior representative program has grown rapidly and Trevor’s appointment underlines our commitment to providing a safe, positive and welcoming environment for all coaches, players and parents/guardians, and one in which our coaches and athletes can thrive.

“We’re excited to have him on board in this very important role and I look forward to working with him to build an even stronger basketball program.”

Trevor’s position is a wide-ranging one and will include:

  • Engaging with Directors of Coaching and establishing what support our coaches want/need
  • Running leadership, culture and behaviour sessions for coaches and being a mentor or “independent” observer to coaches
  • Aiding communication skills and development
  • Creating documentation to support coaches
  • And implementing a raft of processes to improve communication between coaches, players and parents/guardians.

“I’m excited to work with Michael (Dimattina) and Steve (Lunardon) to ensure all Dragons coaches are well supported,” Trevor said. “I will leave the technical coaching to them, while I will concentrate on coaching styles, communication skills and leadership.

“I am conscious the club is fully committed to all coaches building healthy and positive relationships with their players and parents, which aligns with my coaching values and my other role on the club’s Child Protection and Welfare Committee.”

Trevor served Victoria Police for 30 years before retiring as an Inspector early last year and has enjoyed great success as a coach, working with basketball and football teams over the past two decades – his stops including Oakleigh Chargers and Melbourne VFLW. He’s involved in the football coaching program at Melbourne Grammar School and is a facilitator with SALT (Sports and Life Training), where topics covered include positive coaching, parenting, wellbeing and healthy masculinity.

After playing junior representative basketball for Bulleen, Trevor reconnected with the sport in recent years when his daughters Lucy and Emily (pictured with Trevor, above) took up the game.

Dragons Media will have more to share about Trevor and his new role when he begins work with the club this month.

Holiday hooping

We’ve found our new favourite place to play ball – inside the Old Town walls of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Your challenge over the holidays is to find a court that rivals this one, and we can’t wait to see it. So wherever you’re spending your well-earned break, snap a photo or two of the courts you see – or hoop on – along the way, and send them to us at [email protected]

Tell us where it is and the Dragons and/or Community Basketball League team you play for, and we’ll share it on our social media platforms when the office re-opens next week. As always, bonus points if your shot includes a photo of you and/or a family member showing off your team’s colours.

Have a great break and Happy New Year, Camberwell.

Season’s greetings
