A final recap from U14 National Club Championships

After the most amazing week at U14 Club Championships, we asked for a recap from coaches, players and parents. Here’s a sample of what they had to say:

Coach quote:

“I’ve been coaching rep basketball for nine years. In that time, I’ve coached, as an estimated guess, about 500 games for Camberwell Dragons.

“Nothing compares to these eights games at Club Championships.

“The atmosphere, the support from the Dragons family, the competitiveness of competition. It’s as peak as junior sport can get.

“We operated like a professional sporting team for a week – we scouted, we had shoot around before games, we had court announcers, air horns, you name it. The time between games at the Hub saw an already tight-knit group grow tighter still. We had a down ball tournament, a chat with an AFL star, a parents’ three-point shoot-out. There were 830383 instant coffees consumed by parents and coaches, and so many bananas consumed by players, that you’d think it was a monkey enclosure. It was a completely unforgettable week and the perfect way to cap off the incredible season we had as a group. I believe all 10 players represented Camberwell to the best of their ability in the club’s first ever Nationals campaign.

Saturday: we got a team photo, we had an on-court training to hammer home our focal points for the week, and coaches + TM attended a technical committee meeting.

Sunday: We kicked off with a 75-55 win over Cockburn (3rd in WA state champs). A convincing start saw us control the game until the end. We rolled back to Clyde Primary School (our “hub” for the week) for some game review and lunch, and then matched up against Canberra. A slow start paired with a tough match-up against their 6’7” centre saw us lose by 11.

Monday: A fantastic game against North Bears (eventual silver medalists, and 22-0 in NSW Premier League). A narrow 62-67 loss, but a gallant effort.

Tuesday: A 5pm tip-off for our only game of the day. We were fortunate enough to have Collingwood star Tom Mitchell speak to the lads for an hour pre-game about resilience, body language, and being a great teammate. We rolled Darwin 92-54. Go Dragons!

Wednesday: We survived a late charge from North West Tasmania to hold on for a 80-73 win, however a short turnaround between games saw us a little fatigued and consequently suffer an 11 point loss at the hands of Knox (VC silver medalists).

Thursday: A fatigued but resilient Dragons crew controlled Bulleen for 3 quarters, but unfortunately losing a few players due to injury and other saw us come up just short in the 4th.

Friday: We capped off our week with another convincing win over Darwin, finishing with 4 wins and 4 losses.

Player quote (Jake)

“I really enjoyed the Nationals tournament being able to bond with the team at the Hub and meeting new kids from other teams. Competing at that high level was also a great learning experience.

“The lowlight were competed against two other Vic teams, would have been better against other states and the dusty courts!”

Parent quote

“The Foot Locker Club Championships provided an exceptional experience for our boys, allowing them to compete against the nation’s top U14 basketball players in a week of intense competition. The dedication of our head coach, Conor, along with assistant coaches Tom, Mitch, and Mark, was outstanding. They established an elite training hub, complete with a full-time physiotherapist, at a court near the Casey venue. This set-up enabled the boys to train effectively, scout opposing teams, and develop game strategies while also providing a space to relax and recover between games. I am also immensely grateful to Andrew our TM and the parents who, over the 10 weeks leading up to the tournament, worked together to fundraise and ensure the boys had everything they needed to excel. This unforgettable experience has undoubtedly created lifelong memories for these young men.

“A HUGE thank you to the sponsors that supported the boys on their Club Championship journey: Monopoly Dreams, BG Private, Kim’s Cleaning and Home Care Services, Melbourne Sports Photography, Bread Street (Mont Albert), Bennet’s Butchery (Canterbury) and Rocket Digital.”

Dragons 2024 Club Awards

We are proud to announce the Dragons club award winners for 2024:

VJBL Female Coach of the Year – Prue Ainsworth

I’m very pleased to announce Prue Ainsworth as coach of the year for season 2023/4. Prue has been a leading light in developing sound fundamentals across the whole U12 age group, while leading her own team to the Preliminary final of the Victorian Championships, ably assisted by Aimee Page. Prue’s dedication and commitment to the club shines through in her welcoming and friendly manner, and she embodies the enthusiasm and nurturing attributes that Camberwell Dragons are known for. (Michael Dimattina – Girls DOC)

VJBL Male Coach of the Year – Conor Mathews

Conor coached the 14.1 Boys and had an outstanding year with the group. The team qualified for VC prior to Christmas and then went on to qualify for the National Junior Classic and the U14 Club Nationals which were firsts for the club. Conor has been an integral part of the team’s success which was in no small part due to his attention to detail and his desire to have the boys in his care achieve their best. He brings a level of knowledge and professionalism to the age group and is a worthy recipient of this award. Congratulations Conor. (Steve Lunardon – Boys DOC)

Ben Jago Awards – Alexandra Palmer and Ruben Crawford

Ben Jago played with the club and died from a tragic accident in 2013. The award is given to somebody who represents similar values to those that Ben had. We choose a player from both our boys and girls programs who works hard, goes above and beyond with extra training, displays great teamwork, is a kind teammate and shows great respect for all coaches.

Alexandra Palmer: 14/4 Girls

Alex, as the ultimate team player, is the winner of this year’s “Ben Jago” award from our girl’s program. Alex started in our Development Squad and has progressed through U12s and U14s and will go on to play in our U16s next season. Alex is a positive supporter to her team mates and can be heard cheering loudly when on the bench and she regularly attends our holiday camps where she works hard to improve her game.  Alex also competes in little Athletics and finished in the top 10 athletes in the state for javelin in her age group. Congratulations Alex, a positive young female athlete makes you a very deserving winner of this award.

Ruben Crawford: 14/3 Boys

Ruben, a key player from our 14/3 team, is the proud winner of this year’s “Ben Jago” award from our boy’s program. His dedication on and off the court is impressive—he consistently puts in the effort to improve and never misses a chance to support his teammates. Ruben’s commitment shines through not only in practices and games but also at the Dragons holiday camps, where he’s always eager to learn and grow. His hard work and positive attitude make him a perfect fit for this award.

Julian Fields AwardJohn Gray

The Julian Fields award is given to an individual for their contribution to the Big V program at Camberwell. This year’s recipient John Gray, while not working as a part of the game day team, provided enormous help in ensuring game day ran smoothly. When needed, John would jump on the score table to ensure games could be played with accurate scoring, John would also, without being asked, help with setting up and packing up the many chairs or pieces of equipment. It is safe to say that people like John Gray are one of the reasons we can provide the gameday experience we do.

Garry Stephens AwardCraig Dingle

The Gary Stephens Award recognises someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the Camberwell Dragons as a whole. Craig Dingle is the Gary Stephen’s award recipient for 2024. Craig gives up his time to take photos at our Big V games and supplies the photos for us to use for our socials. He also organised a photo shoot for the 14/1 boys to use for National Club Champs and supplied all of those photos for us to use in our socials as well. All of this was done purely as a volunteer. Craig donates so much of his time and expertise to the club year after year and is an all round great bloke!

Dale and Doug Helms AwardTricia Stevenson

The Dale and Doug Helms Award recognises someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the Junior Program (VJBL) at the Dragons. Tricia Stevenson is the Dale and Doug Helms award recipient for 2024. Tricia is the ultimate volunteer, always answering the call when help is needed. Tricia helps out on the door at tryouts, on our main uniform day, has been a Team Manager numerous times and volunteers for anything else as required. Thanks for your continuous hard work behind the scenes Tricia.

The unbeaten Bears (2-0) lead Group F at the Championships from the Dragons (1-1), Canberra (1-1) and Cockburn (0-2).

Dragons close at 1-1

Camberwell Dragons 14.1 Boys will open Day 2 at the Foot Locker Under 14 Club Championships with a 1-1 win-loss record after splitting today’s games against WA team Cockburn Cougars and Canberra.

The Dragons were too good for the Cougars in a 75-55 win in the tournament opener for both teams at Casey Stadium this morning, but couldn’t contain contain Canberra at the same venue this afternoon – the Gunners pulling away for an 81-69 victory and their first win at the Championships.

“A bit of a rough second game of the tournament,” Camberwell assistant coach Tom Macleod told Dragons Media. “We took some great learnings that we will take into the future games. We are proud of the sportsmanship displayed by the lads.”

Owen Trainor had a team-high 17 points to lead the Dragons and was one of three double-digit scorers for Camberwell with Jake Zeunert (13) and Bailey Russell (11).

The Dragons’ campaign resumes tomorrow with a 3pm game against Norths Bears (2-0), while Canberra (1-1) will square off against Cockburn (0-2).

The 14.1 Boys proudly supported by Monopoly Dreams, BG Private, Kim’s Cleaning and Home Care Services, Melbourne Sports Photography, Bread Street (Mont Albert), Bennet’s Butchery (Canterbury) and Rocket Digital on the road to the Championships.
