Game day for Danni and the Dragons

Good luck from all at Camberwell to coach Danni Fidge and our Youth League Women today as they take their shot at clinching a place in the Big V Victorian Youth Championship division.

Coming off a campaign in which they reached the Youth League One Women title game, the Dragons will go head to head with Nunawading Spectres in a high-stakes qualifying game at Montmorency Secondary College this morning (10am, Court 1), with the winner to secure a place in Championship for the 2024 season.

“It’s going to be challenging, but I think we also have a good chance to qualify,” Danni told Dragons media during the week.

“In saying that, we don’t know what our opposition is going to be like. We don’t know what we’re really up against. So (assistant coach) Tom (Fidge) and I have been talking and our theory really is we’re just going for a really good crack at it. And if we get in (Champonship), then we’re meant to be there and we’re up to it. And If we don’t, then we just know that we’ve still got some things to work on.”

Should the Dragons take care of business against the Spectres, Danni appreciates what the result would mean for our club and, in particular, our Girls program.

“It’s actually really important because I think it would be great for our juniors coming through to see the youth league girls playing at the highest standard,” she said. “And something for them to aspire to as well. To say, ‘This is where we can be in a few years’. Because our Under 16s and Under 18s aren’t far away. Some of them of them are already playing with us, so I think it would be really good for them just to see what the competition is like and what they’re aiming for.”

if the Dragons fall against Nunawading, they’ll move on to play a second-chance game against Ballarat or Eltham at the same venue this afternoon. Tip-off for that one, if required, will be 3pm.

Entry to today’s Big V Qualifying games is free, so let’s get behind our YLW team, Camberwell. And if you’re at the game and have news, updates, photos and/or videos to share, please send them to [email protected]
