Camberwell Dragons Youth League Men’s team hits the road to Melbourne University tonight on a mission to stretch its Big V season-opening winning streak to three.

Acelin Adama (pictured) and the Dragons opened their campaign with back-to-back wins last weekend, edging McKinnon in double-overtime on the road on Saturday night before holding off Sunbury in front of a big crowd at Balwyn High School on Sunday.

Guard Matt Marcun led the way with 27 points (on 6-of-8 shooting from the three-point line) and six rebounds against the Cougars, while Jesse Macleod stepped up with some big plays late to put the Jets away – Macleod closing with a game-high 20 points, six boards and three steals.

Game time tonight against Melbourne Uni (0-1) at Nona Lee Sports Centre is 6pm.

Tonight’s is the first of two games this weekend for the YLM, who’ll call on Coburg at Coburg Stadium on Sunday. That one against the Giants will get under way at 3pm and is the second game of a double header also featuring our Youth League Women.

The YLW, led by Zoe Johnson (11 points, 16 rebounds, five steals) and Maddy Grossman (23 points, including six three-pointers, four rebounds, three assists, also had it going on opening weekend and pulled away for a big 67-39 win against visiting Collingwood.

Coburg was also a big winner on opening weekend, rolling to double-digit wins against Wyndham and Whittlesea. The Dragons and the Giants will tip things off at 1pm tomorrow.

While our two Youth League teams look to build on their successes of last weekend, our Division 1 Women, led by head coach Cara Jeffers and featuring a mix of familiar and new faces, will see their first action of the season when they open their campaign on the road against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

Home, sweet home

The Big V is back, and so are the good times at Balwyn High School.

Camberwell Dragons swept their two games at Balwyn today, with our Youth League Men and Women both registering wins in their home openers, against Sunbury and Collingwood respectively.

The YLW team opened the afternoon – and its season – in style with a 67-39 rout of Collingwood in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd, with the Dragons dominant across the second and third quarters.

Leading by just one at quarter-time, Camberwell pulled away with a 27-14 second term and put its local rival away for good with a 22-8 third quarter.

Maddy Grossman paced the Dragons with a game-high 22 points (6-of-14 from the three-point line), Zoe Johnson (pictured) added an 11-point, 16-rebound double-double and Tilly Quartel closed with six points and nine boards in a productive 15 minutes.

While the YLW had it all its own way after quarter-time, our YLM were pushed to the limit by Sunbury.

The Jets rallied with a 23-19 third quarter to close within two points with one to play and looked well place to upset their host, before Jesse Macleod stepped up with some huge plays down the stretch to put the game out of Sunbury’s reach.

Macleod closed with a game-high 20 points, six rebounds and three steals and Matt Marcun added 18 points and four boards for the Dragons, who improved to 2-0.

Camberwell opened its season with a 108-106 double-overtime win at McKinnon on Saturday night. Marcun leading the way in that one with 27 points, including six three-pointers.

Marcun shot the ball at a sizzling 75 per cent (6-of-8) from the three-point line to pace the Dragons, who closed the night with three double-digit scorers – Zac Bezzina finishing with 13 points in just under 15 minutes.

Camberwell led this one by 14 with a quarter left in regulation before its host struck back with a 24-10 final term to send the game into the first overtime.

The Dragons dominated the glass, outrebounding McKinnon 60-40 behind the work of Macleod and Caleb Lingwood-Smith, who pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to go with six points.
