Rachel Jeffers will write another chapter in Camberwell Dragons’ rich history when she steps on to the hardwood at Boroondara Sports Complex with our Big Division 1 Women’s team this weekend.
Rachel (nee Bett) will become the first Camberwell women’s player to play 200 Big V games – and only the second player in club history to reach the milestone – when the in-form Dragons host Chelsea (5pm) on Saturday, and that’s an occasion well worth celebrating.
“Rach has done it all and is a true stalwart of the club,” Dragon D1 Women’s team coach Cara Jeffers said this week. “It has been great to see Rach return to the court after a couple of years off to have beautiful (baby boy) Noah. Rach is a true testament to the Camberwell pathway, and we are all incredibly proud of her.”
Describing Rachel as a “true Camberwell Dragons legend”, Cara said she was a natural leader, known for her voice, team-first mentality and the ultimate role model.
“And, of course, she never misses being the counter for a good ‘hands in’,” Cara said. “I am stoked to have the opportunity to coach Rach again. Her basketball IQ and voice among the team is invaluable, her hard work, dedication and passion for the game is nothing short of inspiring, and we love having her back in the #22.”
Rachel ranks fourth all-time in the Camberwell women’s program for total Big V points scored and is second in assists, but her impact on the club extends far beyond raw numbers.
“Not only has Rach made a huge impact to our team this year,” Cara said. “She has inspired and challenged younger players to be their best and to continue playing and coaching in some capacity.
“Rach is always willing to put her hand up to help around the club and continues to be a friendly face who is always up for a chat and a laugh! A huge congratulations, Rach, thank you for your unwavering commitment and for being such an integral part of the Dragons family.”
Camberwell Basketball and the Dragons take this opportunity to thank Rachel for her contribution to the program over many years and look forward to celebrating this fantastic milestone with many familiar faces at BSC on Saturday night.
• Rachel and the Dragons enter this one against the Gulls on a three-game winning streak and well placed in the top four with a 5-3 record.
Their game is the first of a double header also featuring our Championship Men, with coach Shawn King and his team going head to head with Sunbury at 7pm.
